Let’s say you have family or friends visiting from out of town and they only have one night to spend in Corning. You want to show them a good time with great food, good beer, and a casual atmosphere. Holmes Plate (54 W. Market St, Corning, NY) has always been my go-to spot for just those occasions. They have a fantastic menu for dining and it’s is my favorite bar in Corning.
First and foremost I absolutely love the food here. It’s comfort food like Baby Back Ribs (if I’ve had better I don’t recall), big burgers, wings, soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, steaks and Smoked BBQ that can’t be beat. You might think that sounds like a pretty standard bar-food menu, but the difference is you’re getting fresh unique ingredients prepared by a great chef. I also need to mention that you will not find better fresh cut fries (they take me back to childhood summers on the boardwalk).
On my last couple of visits I tried the hot wings and smoked pulled pork sandwich. Unlike a lot of restaurants these days, when you order your wings “hot” you get HOT. It’s not a standard vinegary hot sauce; it’s original, very spicy, and has a lip smacking smokiness that I can’t put my finger on. They don’t advertise a variety / sampler of wings but I’m going to ask if they’ll let me sample the BBQ, Honey BBQ, and Garlic Parm so I can give them all a try. As for the pulled pork? Well, anything you order from Holmes Plate that says Smoked is going to be awesome.
The bar is a great place to chill with friends, and they also have live music, DJs, and sports (Direct TV MLB / NFL) on various nights. It’s a casual and fun atmosphere that feels like a home-town bar without being too “townie.” During warmer seasons the large windows across the front are removed for a more open / breezy ambiance that lets you take in downtown Corning. Holmes Plate is easy to find when you’re hungry; just follow your nose to the apple wood smoked BBQ aroma that is wafting down Market Street.
