One of my favorite winter hikes is along the Chemung River levee on the first warm(ish) day after a big freeze. The ice builds up along the river’s edge, and as the water recedes, leaves large chunks just sitting along the shore. You can walk the Levee from Corning’s north side all the way past East High. ?Just a word of caution: be very careful and stick to the top of the levees if you have kids / pets. The ice is constantly flowing and breaking, it’s sometimes hard to tell where the ice wall ends and the river begins, and loud sudden cracking and splashing will scare the bejesus out of you.?
