Beekman 1802 is one of the “fastest growing lifestyle brands in the country,” according to Nasdaq, and it’s coming to Market Street for the Summer. Targeting a May 23rd open date (just another reason to celebrate during GlassFest weekend) the pop-up mercantile is scheduled to stay open for about 6 months.
If you haven’t heard of Beekman 1802, it’s?a conglomerate of products started by Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, 2012 winners of CBS’s The Amazing Race. The couple bought the historic Beekman 1802 Farm in Sharon Springs, NY in 2007 and have since built a lifestyle brand that includes their own TV show, bestselling cookbook and memoir, and seasonal festivals in addition to the mercantile.
Last summer, the “Fabulous Beekman Boys” (a?nickname attributed?to their?reality show) opened the first pop-up store?in Cooperstown, NY. Over the Winter, they had a holiday-themed pop-up in Manhattan’s East Village, and now they’re opening one in Corning. Based on the previous shops, we can expect a great selection of food (artisan cheese, pasta, honey) and home accessories (decorations, blankets and pillows, books and stationery).
More than the selection of goods or a new store in town is the idea that Josh and Brent selected Corning’s Gaffer District?as a follow-up to their East Village location. Our tourism numbers support the decision, of course; if you didn’t know, Corning ranks third in tourism among all cities in New York State (behind only New York City and Niagara Falls). But Beekman 1802 would not be the fastest growing lifestyle brand if they didn’t pay attention to lifestyle – and it’s a big deal to have their blessings on this small city as a lifestyle destination.
So while you’re in town for GlassFest or throughout the summer, be sure to stop at 18 West Market Street across from the Palace Theatre. Remember, it’s a nod to Corning and it’s an injection of pride in the strength of our culture. And it’s also a pretty cool place to get some artisan cheese this summer!
