Problem
- It’s Sunday morning (ugh)
- You’ve slept in, but can’t think of a reason to get out of bed
- Your over-sized flannel pajama shirt makes you nostalgic for the 90s
Solution
Soul Full Cup (SFC) is to the 1990s, what a proper diner is to the 50s/60s – not a characterization of its time period, but a still-surviving relic. While the 90s left behind some annoyances like grunge clothes and Starbucks, it also gave us Nirvana & the local coffee house. Small towns not on the Starbucks radar were popping out their own versions, and that turned out to be a good thing. While independents like Soul Full Cup retain that ideal of what a coffee house could be (not a donut shop), Starbucks has basically become McDonald’s without french fries.
However, SFC isn’t quite the hipster / musician / artist cliché you might picture. Depending on what you’re looking for, that may or may not be a good thing. The seating is nice / new feeling, but mostly just tables and chairs. In my opinion, they should put in cozy seating for increased lounge-ability. There is a single sofa and a couple of soft chairs, but they are in need of replacement before I consume food on them.
I spent this morning there with my kindle and girlfriend (I brought both in case one started to bore me). I’m always nervous when I first go into a coffee house; if there’s one thing I know, the rules are 1) order quickly and 2) order in such as way as to impress the server with your extensive knowledge of coffee. Here’s the script I followed today:
[clear]
Me
Yes I ummm… hmmmm… well let’s see..
Server
I’ll be back
[server walks away]
Eventually I ordered a “Chi Charger” (Chi Tea w/ a double shot of espresso / LOVED IT) and a blueberry muffin. As is usually the case with classy cultured women, my girlfriend ordered something she likes, but to me tastes like shoes. The drink selection is large but not confusingly extensive (or at least, it’s well organized). The pastries are impressive, having anything from vegan peanut butter cookies to blueberry cupcakes exclusively for meat eaters. They also roast their own coffee and you can pick up ground or whole bean bags at the counter.
One of the things the 90s should have left behind is the Soul Full Cup website. You’re better off hitting them up on their FaceBook page.
