Amazing cakes? Check. Espresso bar? Check. Great breakfast and lunch menu? Check and check. Walker Cake Company (127 W Market St) is awesome. During their first week, I stopped in for breakfast and / or lunch at least three days in a row… maybe four. Service was a little slow and bumpy at first, but that is expected for any new business where lines immediately form in front of employees who haven’t had a chance to get a workflow.
Opening at 7AM, they have a variety of unique menu items for breakfast. A variety of waffles and pancakes come apple filled and fruit topped. Everything is fresh and made on site. You won’t find goopy berry flavored high fructose corn syrup here. But you will find fresh black berries and blue berries on top of thin crispy waffles. One of my favorite’s is the egg and cheese sandwich on a home made croissant (with side of home fries).
The espresso bar has a bunch of coffee, chai, and espresso drinks to choose from (like a French Toast Latte or a Machiatto). I didn’t try any of the specialty drinks, but I have stopped in for a House Blend coffee when I was too lazy to make my own at home.
The lunch menu, as you might expect by now… also awesome. I’m not going to read it off to you here – you’ll just have to stop by – but one of my favorites is the Ruben which is made with thick cut turkey on homemade bread. It’s a true café with an awesome menu… but also, kick ass cakes.
It would just be more interesting from a literary standpoint to throw a punch now and tell you that their cakes look horrible. But I can’t do that. The owner (Adrian Walker) is the Cake Designer and he knows what he’s doing. He has trained with cake making legends. I read through a pamphlet he put together which detailed the ingredient quality options and their relation to the design elements for building particular cakes. Instead of boring your further with the details here are some photos from their cake gallery.
I haven’t even mentioned their pasties and pies. Just stop in. Walker Cake Company is a welcome addition to the Gaffer District.
The cakes look really nice but they are very dry and way too sweet. Had one from a baby shower and no one could eat it. If you’re looking for taste I say find a different place…
I haven’t had cake from here (I’m not a big cake eater). My mom fancied herself as a gourmet cook, and growing up everything was always too rich or too sweet for me. I’m sure this place would work with you, have you try samples, etc… Their pamphlet had a ton of options and ideas. I imagine there is a line they have to walk between particular types of cake and design elements / stability.
Hmmm thanks for yet another nice and interesting post. Where do you get your inspiration for all this :|? – Sportster
They told me that they do not use High Fructose Corn Syrup in anything!! And they try to use ingredients that are all natural whenever possible.
This is truly nice content and insightful weblog, I adore what you’ve done right here, as well as sharing excellent material with great tips and concepts, I’m really pleased to submit my comment on this weblog, many thanks to the author.
