I love Atlas Pizza. To be honest, I’ve only been in Corning for 3 months and I have not been to every single pizza place in town or explored the menus as much as I’d like. However, Atlas Pizza really stands out so far. I have been here three times, tried a bit of their menu, and have been more than satisfied with everything.
The first thing my girlfriend and I ordered was their garlic cheese bread. FANTASTIC! I can’t go here without ordering this. Unlike most other places, you can really taste their specialty blend of cheese. It’s a great “deep” cheese flavor. The dipping sauce was very good, but the cheese and garlic bread were so good, I opted to go without the sauce for most of it (which is rare for me because I love good sauce on my bread).
We ordered a large pizza with roasted red peppers. We skipped the additional charge for roasted garlic and opted for the free option of minced garlic (why minced garlic as a topping is free, I’m not sure, but I approve!). It must have something to do with the fancy spinning brick oven… our pizza was amazing. When it comes out hot, it may be a little too “mushy” at first for some people, but you’ll change your tune once you taste it.
As much as we enjoy eating out, it’s really not economical or healthy to be on the town eating at restaurants all the time. One night when we were out shopping on Market St we decided that we should just split a sub, so we headed into Atlas a couple weeks after our first visit. Well we didn’t really stick to our plan once we got inside. Bonnie wanted an Italian sub and I wanted a Philly cheese steak.
…Just so you know where I’m coming from, I lived in Philadelphia for 5 years, I ate a lot of cheese steaks. In fact, my job consisted of working for celebrities who often depended on my knowledge of the good “steaks” in town [none of which came from Pat’s or Geno’s unless by request]. At one point, I realized I had gained 30 pounds which I blame mostly on my cheese steak intake. I had to go on a pretty strict diet to get back in shape (which I did within 3 months).
I still have the occasional Philly steak, so its important for me to find a good one in town and not waste my time. My first cheese steak in Corning was at Aniello’s. I know everyone tells me they love Aniello’s and I’m sorry to rag on it (I still have not tried a plain pizza from here), but it was pretty much the worst cheese steak I have ever had (dry and tasteless… and since they don’t carry ketchup, I had to poor pizza sauce on it). In comparison, Atlas had a good Philly steak. Of course it wasn’t a true Philly, but it was good in it’s own way. The bread was homemade, and the flavor was great.
Bonnie’s Italian sub was very good as well. You can see from the photo that the subs were huge! Bonnie took about 75% of her’s home and I took half of mine. Atlas Pizza is a real winner in my book. It also has a nice sit down atmosphere. It was crowded the second time we were there, but the staff didn’t seem too hectic, they had some HDTVs with sports, and sitting by the window has a great view of Market St.
Atlas is my favorite. When I’m on Market St, I like to stop in, grab a cheese slice, and enjoy.
I’m glad I’m not the only one to feel that way!
I’m sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your cheesesteak at Aniello’s. But, like every great specialty restaurant, there are rules. There are certain items that Aniello’s is known for and what keeps people coming back. The philly cheesesteak is not one of them. In fact, I have probably been to Aniellos at least a hundred times in my life and I didn’t even know it was on the menu.
As far as subs go I personally would stick to the the three parms (chicken, sausage, or meatball). The hot ham and cheese is also good. There are many others that love the chicken wing sub, although as much as I love wings, its not for me. If you’re gonna order a pizza order the NY style plain or pepperoni. It’s the best I have had anywhere. If you have a specific topping you like, that would probably be fine too. It’s also important to know that Aniello’s pizza is greasy, so it’s better to eat there rather than wait for delivery as the oils tend to soak into the crust after awhile. If you need to eat it at home, do a pick up, and eat as soon as you can. Lastly, I will say that if you’re not in the mood for a pizza or sub, the antipasto salad is a favorite as well.
I look forward to an Aniello’s write up in the near future. Happy Eatings
I’ll take your recommendations. Everyone tells me to go for a regular pizza at Aniellos. I’ll try to get one of those next week. I also enjoy anti-pasta so I’ll give that a try too. Nothing wrong with a greasy pizza! 🙂 Thanks for the comments. Keep em’ comin’
