This coming Sunday – July 31st, 2011 – from Noon to 8PM is the 64th Annual Ukrainian Festival.  Located in Ukrainian Park on the Corner of Garfield St, and McCauley Ave. in Elmira Heights, NY.

I won’t be around the bush… I would like to say I’m going to participate in the local Ukrainian culture, learn about their heritage, and experience their traditions…  While those things are certainly a draw for some, I’m going for two reasons: Pierogies (AKA pyrohy) and Golabki  / Holopchi (AKA golumpki; AKA Pig in a Blanket).

I was partially raised by 3 Polish ladies that ran a restaurant serving these two favorites of mine, that are also staples of Ukraine. There’s nothing like the real thing, and my taste buds can not wait until Sunday.  According to the official facebook event page, “Elmira Heights & the St. Nicholas Church were recognized by Mrs. T’s Pierogies as a finalist in the search for the Pierogy Capital of America.

There will be food, drinks, games, prizes, music, and dancing (which I assume is Polka – always entertaining no matter how you look at it).
